Fast data line between Erlangen and Garching
Since recently, a fast communication link connects the Erlangen Regional Computing Center (RRZE) with the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) on the research campus in Garching near Munich. This high-performance network can transmit 100 gigabits per second in each direction and ensures increased reliability in service management. It also offers Bavarian researchers more options for accessing data and services all over the federal state, linking northern and southern Bavaria even more closely.
Fast data lines are essential for data-intensive simulations and research in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Classic methods of computation are increasingly being combined with statistical procedures and models used in AI systems. Hence, the users of the Erlangen National High Performance Computing Center (NHR@FAU) also benefit from the improved connectivity of the high-performance computers and AI systems of LRZ and NHR@FAU via the data link. It facilitates the selection and combination of appropriate compute resources for AI researchers. NHR@FAU and LRZ intend to further expand their hardware capacity, consulting, and training offerings, in the field of AI and beyond. These services are made available to all universities and universities of applied sciences in Bavaria.
