Monthly HPC Café: Using containers on the HPC systems at NHR@FAU (June 24, hybrid)

A cup of coffee and a plate with a sweet piece of pastry on it in front of a computer keyboard.

The next HPC Café will take place on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. CEST as a hybrid event. As always, there will be plenty of time to get in touch with your favorite HPC group. We invite you to come to NHR@FAU to enjoy coffee, cake, and computing.

The event starts at 4:00 p.m. CEST with an open coffee chat. The presentation is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Topic: Using containers on the HPC systems at NHR@FAU

Speaker: AI Support Team, NHR@FAU

Abstract:

The end of support for Python and Conda snake pits is near! It’s time to containerize your code. With containers, everything is neatly sealed for reproducibility and minimal drama. In this HPC Café session we will dive into Apptainer on our HPC systems in a hands-on, approachable way. We’ll show you how to create and download containers, apply best practices for deployment, and integrate these containers with Slurm—both for batch jobs and interactive runs. You’ll also learn how to encapsulate your Conda environment within a container, giving your research projects greater portability and reproducibility. Finally, we’ll cover key troubleshooting tips and optimizations, ensuring you walk away with practical, ready-to-use containerization recipes for your HPC project.
