The Erlangen National High-Performance Computing Center (NHR@FAU) is part of the Network for National High Performance Computing (NHR). It operates large-scale HPC systems and provides HPC services, related user support, and HPC training to German universities. Its HPC research activities focus on performance engineering, analytic performance modelling, performance tools development, and research software engineering for modern HPC architectures. NHR@FAU investigates and further develops hardware-efficient building blocks, programming concepts, and numerical algorithms for scalable, efficient, and robust iterative sparse matrix applications and stencil-based solvers on large-scale HPC systems. Popular contributions include the LIKWID performance toolkit, the highly-scalable walberla simulation framework, the Execution Cache Memory (ECM) performance model, and the Node-Level Performance Engineering tutorial series. Many of NHR@FAU’s applications are centered around atomistic structure simulations in chemistry, life science, materials science, and physics.

PhD position (m/f/d) in computer science: Job-specific optimization of hardware configuration for energy efficient usage of HPC systems

The Erlangen National High Performance Computing Center (NHR@FAU) is offering a PhD position (m/f/d) in computer science: Job-specific optimization of hardware configuration for energy efficient usage of HPC systems.

The Erlangen National High Performance Computing Center (NHR@FAU) is coordinating a BMBF project within the call Energieeffizientes High-Performance Computing (GreenHPC) titled Quelloffene Lösungsansätze für Monitoring und Systemeinstellungen für energieoptimierte Rechenzentren (EE-HPC). This is a joint project with RWTH Aachen University, Höchstleistungsrechenzentrum Stuttgart (HLRS), Deutsches Klimarechenzentrum (DKRZ), and Hewlett-Packard (HPE). This project integrates the existing software components Global Extensible Open Power Manager (GEOPM), ClusterCockpit, and LIKWID, and extends it with a machine learning component to choose optimal job and system parameters. To validate the effectiveness of the approach together with DKRZ an extensive energy and performance study on the ICON climate simulation code is performed.

Areas of responsibility

  • PhD position (m/f/d) in computer science
  • Integration of ClusterCockpit node agent and LIKWID in GEOPM node agent
  • Extension of the ClusterCockpit monitoring infrastructure
  • Energy and performance modeling to determine optimal job and system parameters
  • Participation on validation study for 2 major HPC applications at NHR@FAU and the ICON climate research code

Necessary qualifications

  • MA/MSc in relevant discipline
  • programming experience (preferred in C, JavaScript, and Golang)
  • some background in web software technology
  • knowledge in performance engineering for HPC application codes
  • interest and fun in software development
  • motivation and curiosity to investigate challenging research questions
  • high degree of self-organization
  • very good written and oral communication skills in English
  • German language skills are an asset

This position is ideal for someone who searches for an interesting, possibly part-time software developer position in a motivated academic environment, and for a limited duration, and is not necessarily interested in active research.

Student Assistant in the area of Computer Science, Computational Engineering (10h/ week)

The Software and Tools Group at the Erlangen National High Performance Computing Center (NHR@FAU) has a vacancy for the following position starting October 15, 2022

Areas of responsibility

  • Collaboration in the development of the monitoring framework ClusterCockpit
  • Support in the administration of our monitoring server
  • Collaboration in the development of a metrics data in-memory cache

Required Qualification

  • Enrolled student in the subjects of computer science or computational engineering or courses of study with comparable qualifications.
  • Knowledge of web software development, especially Javascript (sveltejs), HTML, CSS
  • Programming knowledge in C and/or Golang
  • Interest in software development

Job Description

  • The position is temporary.
  • It is a part-time position, 10 h/week; working hours by agreement.
