The supercomputer “Helma” has been extended in April 2025 with another 384 NVIDIA H200 GPUs. Comprising 768 NVIDIA GPUs (H100/H200), it is now the most powerful system at German universities. Bavaria’s Science Minister Markus Blume has officially started the early user access phase on the full system last week after first stability tests and benchmark runs for TOP500 had been performed.

The 384 NVIDIA H200 GPUs support the development of the Bavarian AI foundation model and complement 200 H100 GPUs in Helma, which were acquired as part of the “BayernKI für die Wissenschaft” initiative. These resources are funded by the State of Bavaria and are accessible for researchers at its universities.

Through this and further investments at NHR@FAU and at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Garching, the Bavarian State Government aims to establish a modern and high-performance AI computing infrastructure for universities in Bavaria.
