Good news at Erlangen Regional Computing Center (RRZE) and Erlangen National High-Performance Computing Center (NHR@FAU): The Budget Committee of the Bavarian State Parliament has just approved an investment of € 270 million for the construction of a high-performance computing center at FAU. A new building for the IT infrastructure and a new office building will be constructed with the ground-breaking planned for 2026.

With the new infrastructure, NHR@FAU and RRZE are jointly developing into a competence and innovation center for the entire northern Bavarian university landscape. The massive expansion will amount to a decisive improvement for scientific research in northern Bavaria. It also equips the future high-performance computing center for the rapid development of artificial intelligence.

A modern working environment and an energy-efficient infrastructure for top-notch IT systems are central building blocks for demonstrating a presence at an international level and synergistically combining artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and data. In order to meet the highest energy efficiency requirements during operation, the a concept for the use of waste heat is being developed in collaboration with Stadtwerke Erlangen.

The architectural concept of the building planners at RKW Architektur + aims to create a visual hybrid of technological and natural materials for the new home of the NHR@FAU and the RRZE, in order to match the surroundings.
