NHR@FAU is growing: Expansion of the southern university campus approved
Good news for the Faculty of Engineering of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) and also for us at NHR@FAU: In its latest meeting, the City Council of Erlangen approved a further expansion of the southern university campus, which will also provide more space for NHR@FAU in the future.
In the last few years, the FAU already proposed a development concept to expand the south campus of the university by a total of 5.11 hectares, including new research facilities such as laboratories, workshops, and offices, as well as more space for the Erlangen National High Performance Computing Center (NHR@FAU). Thanks to the City of Erlangen, this concept has now passed another important step.
We are very pleased about the approval, as new facilities for the NHR@FAU are urgently required. The expansion of our resources is intended to set new national scientific standards and also to strengthen Bavaria’s ability to compete on the international scientific stage. This includes research with and about Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is becoming one of the cornerstones of global competition in science and industry. The new center will further implement latest standards in energy-efficient operation of such large computational resources, including the use of excess heat in the district heating system of the city of Erlangen.
In any case, we are looking forward to the new opportunities the expansion will provide. If you are interested in further details on the so-called “Building Plan No. 467”, find it in the official press release of the city of Erlangen.
