Abstract

The talk gives a survey of quantum computing activities at the DLR Institute of Software Technology. This involves low-level algorithms and software, e.g., for compilation and error mitigation, as well as optimization algorithms for quantum computers and quantum simulation for material science and battery research. The concepts and developments cover the whole software stack from the hardware level to the application level and also consider hybrid computing, i.e., classical high performance computing with quantum computing acceleration.

Short Bio

Dr.-Ing. Achim Basermann is head of the High-Performance Computing Department at German Aerospace Center’s (DLR) Institute for Software Technology and a German Research Foundation review board member in computer science, topic “Massively Parallel and Data Intensive Systems.” In 1995, he obtained his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from RWTH Aachen University followed by a postdoctoral position in computer science at Jülich Research Centre, Central Institute for Applied Mathematics. He led a team of HPC application experts at the C&C Research Laboratories, NEC Laboratories Europe in Germany (1997-2009), before joining the DLR. Dr. Basermann’s current research is focused on extremely parallel linear algebra algorithms, partitioning methods, optimization tools in the area of computational fluid dynamics for many-core architectures and GPGPU clusters, high-performance data analytics, “scientific machine learning” and quantum computing.
