One year of BayernKI: A Retrospective

In 2025, the BayernKI for Science initiative was launched as a central infrastructure that provides computing resources for research projects. Additionally, researchers were able to take advantage of numerous training opportunities at the two responsible centers, LRZ (Leibniz Supercomputing Centre) and NHR@FAU. One year has since passed, but how has the service been received?

It’s about time to reflect on the journey so far and the perception of the offerings at Bavarian universities. The state-funded infrastructure has quickly established itself as a key AI platform within Bavaria’s research landscape, offering about 300 GPUs—or, more precisely, NVIDIA H100 accelerators, each with 94 gigabytes of HBM2e memory.

Looking back at the past year, Dr. Nicolay Hammer and Prof. Gerhard Wellein, responsible for the BayernKI initiative at LRZ and NHR@FAU, answered some interesting questions about their recent experiences. Read the full interview in every detail at the LRZ website.
