Topic: The Blue Swan AI Gigafactory—A Bavarian Proposal
Speaker: Prof. Dr. Dieter Kranzlmüller, LRZ Garching
Abstract: The “Blue Swan” initiative addresses Europe’s need for large-scale, specialized infrastructure to train foundation models for science and industry, with a strong emphasis on a science-driven approach. At its core, Blue Swan is guided by scientific requirements, using research-driven methodologies to assess demand, prioritize use cases, and scale applications across domains. It also integrates European data spaces to enable efficient and low-latency collaboration between academia and industry. The initiative aims to establish a scalable, energy-efficient, and sovereign AI infrastructure as a reference for future exascale AI systems in Europe. Blue Swan combines a GPU-centric, HPC-oriented architecture with advanced energy-efficiency concepts, including direct liquid cooling, renewable energy use, and waste heat recovery to enable near carbon-neutral operation.
